Arboricultural / Tree Surveys
At ABEC, we provide arboricultural services to help clients care for trees and the benefits they bring.
Tree surveys may be needed for planning, understanding and managing trees, assessing safety, and supporting tree care and biodiversity.
A tree survey can take many forms, but generally involves recording the physical characteristics of a tree or group of trees, along with their surroundings, environment, and associated biodiversity.
When is it used?
- Tree surveys are often required for planning applications, helping Local Planning Authorities (LPAs) make informed decisions and enabling clients to protect trees on development sites.
- They are also useful for organisations or landowners managing multiple trees who need support in identifying species, age, and appropriate management to inform future decision-making.
- In some cases, tree surveys form part of wider woodland management planning.
- Tree safety surveys may be required to help clients meet their responsibilities. We can carry out initial assessments and, where necessary, work with arborists to provide more detailed inspections.
Key Components of Arboricultural / Tree Surveys:
Initial Tree Survey
- Identifies tree locations, species, dimensions, condition, life expectancy and retention value
- Identifies tree-related constraints
- Illustrates Root Protection Areas (RPAs) informing layout design and areas of safeguarding
Arboricultural Impact Assessment (AIA)
- Considers how proposed works could affect trees and provides appropriate recommendations.
- Planning document, giving Local Planning Authorities an assessment of the trees impacted and a response.
Arboricultural Method Statement (AMS)
- Outlines the working method required to protect retained trees during development.
