Site description

The land at Saltwood Estate is approximately 5.113 hectares in size and is located around 8km west of Folkestone in Kent, between the villages of Saltwood and Sandling. The site includes areas of ancient woodland and currently supports a range of habitats, including bracken, built linear features, lowland mixed deciduous woodland, mixed scrub, and a non-priority pond.

Proposals for the site aim to enhance its ecological value through targeted habitat improvements. The existing bracken will be replaced with other neutral grassland, while the lowland mixed deciduous woodland will be enhanced from moderate to good condition. Mixed scrub on the site will be partly developed into other broadleaved woodland, with the remaining scrub also enhanced to good condition. The non-priority pond will similarly be enhanced to good ecological condition. These changes are designed to support a diverse assemblage of wildlife and will be especially beneficial for woodland edge species that rely on the combination of shelter from woodland and scrub, and access to open ground for feeding and breeding.

These units are valid for a maximum of two years, provided site conditions do not significantly change.  If more than two years have lapsed between the site survey and habitat works being undertaken, an updated survey will be necessary to ensure recommendations remain valid.
