UKHab / Phase 1 Surveys
We provide UKHab/Phase 1 Surveys across the UK, habitat surveying is a essential step in many projects. Our reports are designed to satisfy local authority requirements while giving clients practical, informed advice.
Phase 1 Habitat Surveys are an older, quicker method that map broad habitat types using colour codes and simple categories for baseline ecological assessments, in most cases projects now use the newer UK Habitat Classification (UKHab) providing a more detailed, standardised system using structured codes and digital mapping, making it suitable for biodiversity net gain and planning.
When someone refers to UKHab surveying, they mean conducting a field survey to identify habitats on a site, assigning each area a UKHab code, and recording habitat condition using standardised assessment criteria set out by Natural England, along with habitat features and extent.
When is it used?
Habitat classification and condition assessments are needed for most ecological reports, such as Habitat Management Plans or assessments for Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) and carbon credits. They provide a baseline of the site and help identify how habitats can be improved.
Surveys are best carried out between April and September when plants can be identified.
Key Components of UKHab Surveying:
These together provide the data needed for ecological assessments and biodiversity calculations.
Habitat Identification
- Recognising and describing habitat types on site
Habitat Classification
- Assigning each area / linear feature a UKHab code
Condition Assessment
- Evaluating habitat quality using criteria from Natural England
Target notes / Features
- Recording important features (eg. trees, waterbodies and invasive species)
Area
- Calculating habitat extent (ha or km)
Photographic records
- Supporting survey findings with site photos
